    Born July 17, 1919 called home to be with his Lord and Saviour September 29, 2016.

    Predeceased by his parents Jacob and Mary Bartel, siblings Margaret and John, son in law Dan Bankert, granddaughter Amanda Nystrom.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Mary of 68 years, and is the eldest of 11 siblings. Surviving him are, Mary (Vic) Friesen, Henry (Lydia), Pete (Genny), Frank (Vivian), Catherine (Frank) Pankratz, Abe, Dick (Pat), Anne Forde; 9 children, Dave (Marg), Darlene Bankert, Bev (Glen) Nystrom, Ken (Marilyn), Sandy (Kevin) Schreiner, Brian (Eileen), Bruce (Crystal), Sheila (Fred) Haasdyk, Robert (Connie), 19
    grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren.

    He immigrated to Canada from Russia with his parents and sister Mary when he was 5 years old.

    The family made their way to Eyebrow Saskatchewan and started farming.

    Jake signed up for the army as a young man and was in WWII as a medic and translator.
    He became friends with fellow soldier Cornelius Krahn who talked about his only sister, Mary.

    Wasn't long before the 2 met and were married May 2, 1948, in Arnaud, Manitoba.

    Jake and Mary moved to Kelowna, and started their large family.

    To support his family he worked at Simpson Sawmill which later became Crown Zellerbach, he was able to retire from the mill at 62 years of age.

    He was one of the founding members of Kelowna Gospel Fellowship Church and was a faithful member and attendee and was also one of the original board members of Gardom Lake Bible Camp near Salmon Arm.
