- "They joined a party of pioneers heading west in 1871, with Manitoba as their goel, trekking via Duluth, Moorehead, Red River Valley, joining up with the Fort Garry - Fort Edmonton trail, better known as the Saskatchewan trail, and on to Third Crossing, taking the north fork of the trail at the Portage, thus passing by the rich Portage plains, for they were seeking wood, water, and clear prairie land. This they found at Third Crossing, and Mr. Cory chose as his homestead, S.E. 1/4 24-14-12, on the west bank of the Whitemud river, later known as the Livingstone district, and only seven miles from the western boundary of Manitoba. The party met with many obstacles on their journey; were treated as intruders by the restless and mischievous Indians."
