  • Notes
    • and later, used this as "werkplaats"
    • From my book "The Haasdijk Family from 1683" (p.5): "To find a bit of living history, we asked at the inn for directions to the home of an 'old timer'. It did not take the 'herbergier' long to think of Waringa, the old 'smit', who lived just to the east and north of the river. The couple that answered my knock must have been well into their seventies as was the smithy. I showed them a picture of my great grandfather on main street watching the 'Onafhankelijkheidsfeest' parade in September of 1913 celebrating the centennial of Dutch liberty from Napoleon's rule, and he told me he was there too. I pointed out my forefather on the faded print and his wife rejoined with 'Nu, die kleine vooraan, die ben jij!'. Sure enough, he recognized one of the young fellows in the foreground as himself."
