    "He came to the United States in 1888 with his family and settled in Cincinnati. Jan was an elevator conductor on Sycamore Street downtown, but could not withstand the air pollution of Cincinnati. In about 1890 he took the family to a farm community in Northwestern Iowa where there were many Frisian families to help each other become established. At first the men of the family were hired as farm laborers as they had been in Holland for many generations. They worked and lived first near LeMars, Iowa, then Orange City. But unlike Holland, farmland was available and Jan could use his meager savings to pruchase enough land for large garden plots in Hull, a small farm village in Sioux County. Jan chose to grow vegetable crops for the extended Langhout family which also included Jan's brother Hulke [Holke], who had brought his large, growing family from Friesland. Jan supplied the family with table food so that the rest of the Langhouts could work on larger farms growing cash crops and grain for cattle feed lots."
